Today Helle from Lucas Loves Cars is speaking with us 5 tips for tidy toys. Being an expect in toys, she’s knows a thing or two!
Toys are fun. They should be fun!
A new toy represents giggles, play, entertainment and enjoyment.
How long does that last? It’s up to you. The more you care for your toys the longer they will last. Think of them like a new pair of shoes. Wear them in the mud and they won’t be good for long.
Here are 5 tips for tidy toys – keeping them clean and safe.
1 – Start with quality.
When you buy quality toys they are less likely to break. Seems obvious, doesn’t it!?
The hard thing is that you often can’t see the difference, but it’s there. It’s the difference between a screw being pre-drilled or the thickness of the wood. Even the way the wood is bonded together. That’s why the inferior toy will snaps even though they look as thick as the quality toy.
It’s not cheap versus expensive, but quality can cost more up front. Buying quality will always save you money, because the toy will last longer and your child will play with it more.
2 – Play with age-appropriate toys.
Sometimes it feels like 3 years is the age where the fun starts. So many toys are rated to 3+ years. Most of the time that has got to do with small parts and the risk of a small child choking.
We have all seen it, often a toddler will pick up a toy and it goes straight into the mouth. So find fun toys that have bigger parts and avoid toys that have small pieces that might break off.
Even as your child gets older, don’t push them to play with toys beyond their years. Kids enjoy toys that are slightly harder than their abilities, but too hard and they will give up.
3 – Put them away and rotate your toys.
At the end of the play session or the end of the day the toys need to be put away. Now I’m not talking about making the playroom stunning and having a Home Beautiful photo shoot. I’m talking about off the floor and back in the box. We need to look after our toys and we don’t want to step on them. #lego
I have found the best way to do this is to have a home for everything. The kids will be quicker to help with pack up if you make the process easy. A box for animals, a box for cars and a box for dinosaurs.
If you like a beautiful space, then you can separate the toys and put them nicely away on the shelf, but kids will learn by watching what you do. You respect the toys, they will learn to respect their toys.
Another way to make this process easier is fewer toys. Take some toys away and put them at the top of the wardrobe or in the garage. Fewer toys mean less mess and actually means more fun.
When you rotate the toys the old becomes new again!
4 – Don’t keep the broken toys!
This comes back to respect for your things. As soon as a toy is broken or is missing a vital piece, it should be removed. Of course we believe in repair if you can. We used to have a fix-it box for broken toys. Sometimes it was the place to put the toy before it went into the bin, to soften the blow when it was a beloved toy, sometimes the toy was fixed and returned.
Anything beyond repair needs to go, no matter how special or precious. If you can’t part with it then take it away from the kids and store it in the memory box.
5 – Clean the toys.
Kids and germs. They go together like cars and roads. To keep the toys clean you could try to keep your child clean when they play. That’s not very realistic, is it?
So our toys will get dirty. Food, saliva, and dirt will accumulate. If the toys are looking a bit dirty, or your child has been sick, it’s time to give them a clean.
Simply wipe them with a warm damp cloth. Wood has antibacterial properties and germs don’t like them so they just need a quick clean to remove food or dirt.
Now they carry a lot of germs. If your child has been sniffly or sick give Mr rabbit a run through the washing machine (check your toy for wash details)
