Have you heard about the new kids on the block, Andie Kids? The gorgeous Mama duo behind this brand have created an organic children’s clothing range that is unisex, plus, not only is it designed here in Melbourne, it’s MADE here too! Love it! I was lucky enough to get a chance to chat with these 2 uber talented women recently. I found out about how they started this business with their 4 young children still at home and what obstacles they had to over come to get it up and going!
Tell us a bit about your business and when you started it
We are Anna and Steph and we’re the co-founders of Andie Kids .
Andie Kids in one sentence is unisex, organic children’s clothing, designed AND made in Melbourne.
Andie Kids was first born at our children’s local playgroup in May 2017. We spoke of dreams and ambitions (blah blah) and Andie Kids was the brainchild of that conversation. Due to the fact that we both felt we weren’t busy enough with two kids each (um, yeah right, what the hell were we thinking??!!) we decided to dive headfirst into the unknown. So after a relatively smooth run (if that includes briefly losing 60m of fabric, and a blown budget) we proudly launched our first range, ‘Sky’s The Limit’ in early December 2017.
We both decided very early on that we wanted our designs to be brought to life locally. We are very passionate about using Melbourne suppliers/makers. This is because we are able to see first hand how every process is done. It’s our little way of supporting other local businesses and working with like minded individuals, it’s the only way to get clothes made!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your family
We are both country girls, who are actually related by marriage (Steph is married to Anna’s cousin). Anna has two boys- Stanley and Otis, and Steph has two girls- Lou and Robbie (yes you read correct, girls). Our kids are similar ages so it’s so nice that they get to grow up together.
What was the main reason why you started your business?
So the inspiration behind Andie Kids… Our children, of course! With two boys and two girls between us, all are so active and love playing outdoors. We noticed that there was a gap in the market for unisex clothes that were cool, but at the same time offered practical every day wear for both girls and boys.
With fashion and clothes design always being a passion of ours, and the fact we could do this together and work around our kids was a bonus.
Any major obstacles you had to overcome to get your business up and going?
Where do we start… (With only 7 months to get it going from start to our launch), working around both having two kids at home full time, we found that a big obstacle, so they would often come along to meetings and fitting etc.
Losing 60 meters of fabric for a few weeks… One of our Summer sets got made in the wrong colour… and our bank account was approved 2 hours before we launched… There was a moment when we had to laugh or we would cry.
All part of the learning curve I guess.
What’s been your biggest business (or personal) achievement so far?
We are so new we are happy to have made it to a successful launch. With a few women we look up to loving the brand and helping in the launch. Also getting into our first store, a really cool local shop, with a products and a style that we love. Little Fenix. Details…
Why do you like having your own business?
We really wanted to get back into work but be able to be there for the kids as much as possible and having your own business gives you the flexibility to do that. Although the flip side is you can’t switch off when you leave your work place… it’s a never ending balancing act.
What would we find you doing on the weekends?
Both being country girls we love heading back to our parents homes (the homes we grew up in) To let our kids get a feel for farm life, feeding the animals and having real outdoor adventures. With family on the river, in Summer, we both love to be out on the boat skiing and in general keeping fit and active.
Do you ever manage to get any ‘me’ time – if so, what do you get up to?
Shopping, and hanging with friends, we are both into fitness and at the moment Hiit and Pilates.
Tell me one random fact about yourself?
Steph- Not sure how random this is but… Love anything Kardashian
Anna- ( she really is obsessed with them and knows more facts about them then her own family J)
Until recently owned a green tree frog that I had for 14 years, called Freddie. He lived in a vintage TV turned into a frog tank… a reptile lover from way back.
Top 2 films you’re happy to watch again and again
Anna – Classic’s like Notting Hill & The Note book
Steph – Too many to choose from. In the past month, ‘Red Sparrow’ and ‘Icarus’ are a must see.
It’s been wonderful learning more about how this gorgeous business started up – thanks so much Anna & Steph! Be sure to pop across to their website and follow them behind the scenes via socia media. A brand to watch for sure!
