She has an incredible range to choose from, you’ll never be disappointed! I’ve wanted to find out more about Helle and how it all started for her… so today I finally got the chance… (and ps. today is your lucky day because they’re having a big sale starting now, up to 50% off – more info at the end of this article)
Tell us a bit about your business and when you started it
When my son turned one and was given a toy car for his birthday, it sparked a car obsession. Not wanting to fill the house with plastic, but finding it hard to find quality toys, I started Lucas loves cars – www.lucaslovescars.com.au – an online toy store which specialises in finding quality, unique gifts for little boys from babyhood to 5 yrs and beyond. We started in June 2012 – so we’re about to celebrate our 6th birthday! Oh and yes, my son is Lucas and yes he still loves cars.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your family
I have a small, close-knit family. My parents came out from Denmark, so growing up most of my family were halfway around the world. My sister and I are close and live 5 minutes from each other, so Lucas has a lot of cousin time
In our house we have Lucas, the star, and Leo the dog, who thinks he’s the star. We are a pretty average family who try to cut down on junk food, junk stuff and screen time. Sometimes we win, sometimes we don’t. Which is OK so long as we are happy and healthy.
What was the main reason why you started your business?
Lucas loved playing with cars as a kid, he would sit for hours with his cars. When people saw it they would often say ‘that’s such a typical boy thing’. I was amazed by the strength of his obsession, because it was like an obsession. He would walk into a shop and find the one toy that had wheels, and there was usually only one, tucked out the back. It was frustrating for me because most stores had such a limited range. It was plastic, expensive or simply not available.
So I created the store that I wanted to shop at, that would help me, and other Mums spoil their car lovers – boys or girls. With a focus on quality, beautiful toys and gifts, we now have a huge range of all sorts of vehicles, tools and dinosaurs. Mums often buy from us and I see myself in their testimonials – My son loves your store, it has everything he loves! – Thank goodness I found you!
Any major obstacles you had to overcome to get your business up and going?
When we started I was working part time, and had Lucas at home for the other 2 days. So my biggest obstacle was finding the time to do anything! Sometimes it still is.
There are always obstacles, my main ones have probably been self doubt and trusting people who don’t deliver on their promises. Sometimes you get knocked down, and then get back up again. I believe that there are people out there who need us, and that keeps me focused when the going gets tough. There is a Mum looking for the perfect toy who needs to come to Lucas loves cars or there is a kid who will love the parcel that I’m sending.
What’s been your biggest business (or personal) achievement so far?
My biggest business achievement is that we are still here and Lucas loves cars is growing! Our sales have had grown steadily for the last 3 years, and I have so many ideas on how to keep that going as well as how to make it more awesome and even more fun! It’s so great when having a business is fun.
Why do you like having your own business?
The 60 million dollar question! I love that I take Lucas to school every day and pick him up from school 2 days a week. I love that I have met so many clever, fabulous women in business. I love always learning new things! I love that I get to have fun at work and no one can tell me to wear a suit or to not dance down the hallway because it’s unprofessional!
What would we find you doing on the weekends?
Spending time with the people I love is what weekends are for. My ideal weekend includes gardening, family time, pottering around the house, hanging with friends and some Netflix if I can fit it in. Oh and chuck in some coffee, wine and food!
Do you ever manage to get any ‘me’ time – if so, what do you get up to?
I am very lucky, I have a partner that takes the kid camping for weekends. So I think I probably get ‘me time’ more than most. It really depends how I feel, but me time for me is creative or social. I don’t like facials but a massage might be on the cards.
Tell me one random fact about yourself?
I have flown a plane on my own! Take off, landing, all of it – solo.
Top 2 films you’re happy to watch again and again
This will probably tell you a lot about me and why I have a toy store.
The Labyrinth. This is my ALL TIME favourite movie – 25 years of watching David Bowie with that hair and wanting to be Sarah. I know it by heart. ‘It’s a piece of cake!’
The Princess Bride. Such a classic story with villans, heroes, RUOS’s and humour.
I quote this one all the time too. Inconceivable!
