Today we’re chatting with the oh so lovely Kirsty from The Jack And Ollie Store. This wonderful woman decided to design products that help make tasks like feeding and changing your little one more manageable and enjoyable. She created the ‘High Chair Caddy’ which means you can store everything you need in one place when feeding a baby/toddler. Plus other products like extra long waterproof bibs and some super stylish change mat covers too. All with the end goal of making life just that little bit easier when it comes to parenting!
It’s was my pleasure chatting with Kirsty recently to give you a bit of an insight into her lovely business The Jack And Ollie Store.
Are you a mum with a business? Tell us about your family.
Yes! I’m a Melbourne Mum of 2 cheeky boys Jack (4) and Ollie (3) who married a kiwi (Andy), whom I met on a bus to Gallipoli on Anzac Day. We still love to travel (although do less of it these days) however we get back to NZ & Echuca whenever we can to spend time with both of our families.
Tell us a bit about your business and when you started it
My biz, The Jack & Ollie Store came about in 2016 after having both of my boys, and wanting to help other Mum’s with some of the challenges I had throughout the craziness – like very messy feeding times!
What was the main reason why you started your business?
I’ve always been a bit entrepreneurial but also very practical. I like to make things easy and to make time for the good things in life. As a mum I happened to find both of my boys were climbers, and loved standing up in the high chair (despite my attempt to strap them in!). So I hated having to leave them to go and fetch things like bibs and wipes, which I never seemed to have near where I needed them.
Although it was probably obvious, after chatting to some mums about the product, I was blown away with how many other mums had the same struggles. Not only having everything where you needed them, but a place to put everything that wasn’t the dining table!!
So this is how the first product the High Chair Caddies came about. It was just about making life easier. And it has just grown from there…
Any major obstacles you had to overcome to get your business up and going?
The concept seemed like such a simple one, but creating something that fitted on most high chairs was tougher than I thought. But once we finally got there we knew we were onto a winner.
The next thing was patenting our product design. Knowing there was nothing much like this out there, we knew we had to try and protect it as much as we could.
And finally, my biggest challenge yet, is getting the word out there. Being a full time stay at home mum, wife, business owner, manufacturer, web designer, photographer, marketer and bookkeeper, like most small business owners its a juggle trying to fit it all in, without letting anything slide too much.
What’s been your biggest business (or personal) achievement so far?
To be honest, outside of having my two beautiful boys, it probably doesn’t seem like much but building this business on my own from scratch has been my biggest achievement yet. It’s been a huge learning curve, most of which has been done in the early evening and the wee hours of the morning but looking back now I have come so far from where I was a couple of years ago.
Why do you like having your own business?
On a personal level, it’s very rewarding to do something for myself and my family, while helping other mums out too. I am someone who loves sharing. Sharing recipes, clothes, tips, good products and anything that might help my friends, family, and now other mums lives easier where I can, and this business has let me do that on a larger scale.
What would we find you doing on the weekends?
In summer time, the boys and I LOVE spending time down the beach. Digging trenches, building sandcastles and trying to jump over all of the crashing waves. Anything that keeps us all active and burning energy! Winter is much the same, enjoying the outdoors, going on adventures (even if that is just at the playground going on a dinosaur hunt) and spending as much time as a family as we can.
Do you ever manage to get any ‘me’ time – if so, what do you get up to?
This is something I am actively trying to schedule more of in now the boys are getting older. Like most mums, it’s hard to put yourself first over all of the other things that need to be done, but I do try and get some exercise in a couple of times a week, whether it’s a spin session at the gym or a walk down the beach, just some time to refill my cup again to help make me a better mum, partner and friend.
Tell me one random fact about yourself?
In my travelling days I lived in a London house with 16 of my best buddies!
Top 2 films you’re happy to watch again and again
Gosh it’s been a LONG times since I’ve sat down and watched a good movie (which you can probably tell from my selection), but I guess you can’t go past Bad Boys for a bit of a laugh and some action, or the Notebook for a good old cry!!
