I’m thrilled today to get to share with you the details behind the beautiful brand Tinta Crayons. One of my personal favs, I just keep coming back to buy more and more from this company because they have our children’s best interests at heart. And I love that.
Tell us a bit about your business and when you started it
Tinta Crayons started in late 2015. We’re passionate about creating safe, natural crayons that encourage kids to play. Our crayons are handmade in Melbourne from Australian beeswax, organic plant waxes and no nasties! We don’t use paraffin, soy or palm waxes and our crayons are free from heavy metals and asbestos.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your family
Between us, we have four children – three girls and a boy. Our eldest daughters are the same age and we met when they started climbing the fence between our two houses to play together. The kids all love being part of Tinta Crayons and their job is chief crayon testers.
What was the main reason why you started your business?
In September 2015, the ACCC did a media campaign about asbestos in crayons on sale in Australia. I (Maria F) was horrified that something so ubiquitous in family homes contained such a toxic substance and thought I’d try to make a natural crayon. I gave the first set of crayons I made to Maria P’s eldest daughter for her birthday, and the business just sort of went from there. We didn’t start out intending to build a business, it was just more trying to make something safe and natural for our kids.
Any major obstacles you had to overcome to get your business up and going?
Getting started was quite straightforward – growing is hard! It’s so much easier to have each other for support and encouragement. Maria P joined Tinta Crayons early on – first by helping pack the orders, then became a full partner in the business. Working together has really helped us overcome any obstacles.
What’s been your biggest business (or personal) achievement so far?
In August last year, we launched our own range of crayons – crayon that we designed from scratch. We worked with some people to help turn our ideas into reality and seeing kids play with our crayons is amazing.
Why do you like having your own business?
We love the flexibility of being able to work around the kids and being able to set the direction of the business to suit what else is happening in our lives.
We’re also very proud of the example we’re setting for our children. Showing them that we can take an idea and turn it into a profitable business is really powerful, especially when we balance that with being mothers as well.
What would we find you doing on the weekends?
Taking kids to sporting activities! Once that’s over, it’s time to catch up with family and friends. We both love entertaining 🙂
On market weekends, we’re out and about meeting people across Australia and introducing them to our crayons.
Do you ever manage to get any ‘me’ time – if so, what do you get up to?
It’s tough – especially for Maria P with three kids!
Maria F – I love to get out into nature, have a walk and enjoy the fresh air. I especially like walking amongst trees.
Maria P – Shopping! Definitely shopping and catching up with friends for coffee!
Tell me one random fact about yourself?
Maria F – I’m really good at pruning trees, I find it really relaxing
Maria P – I have an obsession with growing succulents 🙂
Top films you’re happy to watch again and again
Maria F – The Usual Suspects
Maria P – mine are very cheesy but I have been rewatching the Karate Kid movies with the kids and I love them. Oh, and Dirty Dancing – I could watch that over and over.
Tinta Crayons are created by two Melbourne mums who want to produce a safe, natural crayon, without using palm, soy or paraffin (a by-product of petroleum) waxes. Lots of research and testing has gone into creating the perfect mix of natural waxes to produce natural, sustainable crayons in fun shapes that withstand hot little hands and impart beautiful colour. Being eco-friendly is hugely important here at Tinta Crayons. We use organic waxes that are farmed sustainably. We support local suppliers and source all of our packaging from within Australia. Lots of designs to choose from including, robots, transport, dinosaur, jungle animals, fairies and owls.
