Today Belinda from Nest Design Studio is sharing with us some ways to make a room come to life and personalise it for your little one. This is part 2 in her 3 part series when it comes to Nursery Design. Over to Bel…
In my last blog, I shared with you about my top 3 essentials when it comes to designing a nursery (view here)
This time, we are going to be chatting about how to make the room come to life and personalise it for your little one!
First step is deciding on your colour scheme. While it can be tempting to go for pink and mint for a little girl or blue for a boy, consider some other colour schemes! One of my very favourite thing to pin on pinterst in interesting colour combinations. Think outside the box, think about how you might be able to work the colour scheme into a ‘big’ room when the time comes. You can see my colour inspiration board here and hopefully get some great ideas!
Paint, decals or wallpaper
The next step is deciding if you want to paint the walls, use decals or wallpaper.
While paint feature walls are generally out of fashion at the moment (don’t hate me if you have one!), if you decide to paint, go bold! Do the whole room or go for a half wall feature colour around the room.
Decals are brilliant at creating the wallpaper look without the budget! For renters, they can be a great option too as they can be easily removed (disclaimer – not all decals are equal and some will remove paint when you take them off so be picky when you are choosing!).
Wallpaper is my great love. Be it traditional installation or removable wallpaper, there are so many options available. From faux timber to whimsy prints there is bound to be 1 that you fall in love with.
Your room layout will play a part where you put the paint/decals/wallpaper, but generally it will go on the wall opposite the door when you walk in so you create an impact!
Next up is decor for the walls! Be it artwork, an animal head, garland or dream catcher, these little details are where you can bring in some personality to the room. Think about a song that is important to you, a family pet you love or just something you hope and dream for your little one. When I’m designing for a client, this is where I try and bring in something that reflects their personality.
The final touches are all the little details! To create the perfect shelfie, I will always include:
* books in a clients design that match the decor (and I know are great books to read as well!)
* toys that not only look beautiful but the little one will be able to play with in the future
* a lamp or nightlight that has the perfect amount of lighting (just enough so you can see during the night but not too bright! You want it to have a soft glow).
* space to put special things your little one will accumulate.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the excitement that comes with planning a nursery but don’t forget less is always more! Focus on pieces that you love and not just buying because they are ‘so hot right now’ on instagram. You want to spend your budget on things that can be transitioned to a ‘ big’ room when the time comes!
Which is where I will leave today’s post because next time, I’m going to share with you HOW to transition from a nursery to a ‘big’ room!
