I’m sure at some point in time, we’ve all had someone tell us ‘enjoy those younger years with your children, they grow up so fast!’ and it’s funny how all of a sudden, that makes complete sense. You see your baby go through so many changes in that first year and ever year after. One lovely milestone that everyone comes across is seeing how much your children grow. Today we’re chatting with the incredibly talented Aimee from OnWood. She makes super stylish kids height charts. All from reclaimed NZ timber – Rimu, Kauri and Pine. I caught up with Aimee and she filled me in on her passion and her journey…
Like many families, when we were growing up, we lived in the same house for all of our childhood and our heights were regularly marked on a doorway. Now, here in NZ whether renting or home owning, a family will move on average every four years.
I wanted to carry on this tradition of measuring our children but I wanted a more permanent keepsake and one that would stand the test of time both design wise and quality wise. I couldn’t find anything in the market that was beautifully made, permanent and had a stylish, contemporary design. My background is in marketing and advertising and had a lot of experience in design, so I decided to get stuck in to designing, researching and experimenting with materials. After a lot of positive feedback from family and friends, the initial idea and product that I’d made for my children, nieces and nephews evolved in to what you see today. Not only are the height charts a beautiful keepsake, but I soon discovered that the kids love them and it’s a fun way for your little ones to learn their numbers and great way to encourage them to eat their veges!!
I’d always had a dream of running my own business and at that time with having two young children, no immediate family living near us, and a husband with a time-demanding job I felt it was the right time to take the leap into a venture where I could be flexible with my time. Don’t get me wrong, running a business while having kids is the toughest job I’ve ever done but it means that I can use all of the skills I’ve gained from my career and also be there for special events at school, pre-school, and give time to my kids when they need me. I get a kick out of growing my own brand, seeing my ideas and visions come to life and moving in a direction that I want to go.
Embracing the concept of preservation and sustainability was an important part of setting up the business. All the timber sourced is reclaimed. Most are made from NZ native Rimu, and also Kauri and Pine. We also use environmentally friendly paint, and incorporate these values into the production processes and packaging wherever possible. We get a real kick out of knowing that each and every height chart has once been part of a building and we have given it a brand new use that will be treasured by a family for generations.
Be sure to pop across and check out the whole range of height charts that Aimee creates – you’ll love them! Memories and milestones that can be treasured forever.
