Teething. It’s hard work for babies, and parents too! Today Elisa from One.Chew.Three is chatting with us about tips to help your teething baby.
Those tell-tale signs of teething – rosy red cheeks, nappy rash and extra poos, fever and irritability. Even without teeth showing, it’s quite likely your babe is teething.
When does teething start?
Teething can start as early as four months but the first tooth is likely to make an appearance around 6 months of age. Your baby may show these teething signs well before any teeth are visible, as teeth will move around under the gums before they are ready erupt.
How long this can take really does vary, not only by baby but also by each teeth your baby gets – some can take days, others are weeks or even months.
My first son would show these teething signs for a few weeks, then in the space of about 2-3 nights 4 teeth would appear in one go. My second son was completely random – sometimes he really struggled, other times a tooth would pop up without us really knowing it was on its way.
“The golden rule to how and when those teeth pop up is, well, there is no rule”
The front bottom teeth are most likely to come through first and your baby will likely have all baby teeth by their 3rd birthday, ready to start losing them again a couple of years later!
Like anything, minimising the pain and discomfort for your teething baby is so important so here are our top tips to help
Teething and chew toys
Teething or not, as soon as a baby can, they WILL pop everything in their mouths so it’s useful to have chewable toys and teethers available. You’ll find many options on the market, but we’re a huge fan of silicone and beech wood teethers – naturally. The biggest benefit to this style of teether is the two textures – silicone which massages and soothes as the teeth are moving around under the gum and the harder texture of wood for when teeth are getting ready to break through the gum, as the wood may assist in breaking that final layer or gum to release the tooth. Teethers are also great option for pain relief because baby is in complete control to choose when and how hard they chomp down!
Cool sensations on gums will also help ease the pain for your little one. Some teethers, like all silicone or all rubber varieties, can be popped in the fridge or freezer for extra cooling relief – the boys like to call these icecreams for our little Josie. You can also put a clean, damp face washer in the freezer and let your baby chew the cool material.
Amber necklaces have long been renowned for providing relief for issues like arthritis, inflammation and skin conditions – all closely aligned to symptoms of teething. While the benefits of amber is not scientifically proven, they are well-known providing natural relief for teething babies. If you do decide for your baby to wear amber for these natural benefits, make sure you follow all instructions carefully include removing them when unsupervised, including while sleeping.
There are a variety of teething gels on the market which offer relief from teething which is applied directly on the gums. These are generally applied directly on the gums and provide numbing relief to help manage the pain. Our preference is a natural alternative like Jack n’ Jill Teething Gel, which contains. Other alternative includes well known Bonjela, which are readily available from most pharmacies.
Although these products are all aimed at providing much-needed relief for your teething baby, those teeth do need to erupt through gums at some point which is sure to cause pain and discomfort. When all else fails, baby paracetamol or ibuprofen and cuddles from mum (or dad) may be all you can do.
During these times, make sure you put less pressure on yourself to get things done and give yourself and your baby the time you need to get through those tough days and sleepless nights, remembering this too shall pass.
